The Kershaw Emerson features the famous Emerson Wave Shaped Feature (often just called the "Wave") — a patented, wave-like hook built into the spine of the blade near the handle.
Fastest deployment (Emerson Wave):
Carry the knife clipped tip-up in your pocket, pushed all the way toward the rear seam (the back corner of the pocket).
When you need the knife, reach in, grab the handle firmly, and pull it straight up and out in one quick, natural motion.
As the knife clears your pocket, the Wave hook automatically catches on the edge or seam of your pocket.
This catching action instantly pivots the blade open — by the time the knife is fully out of your pocket, the blade is already fully deployed and locked open, ready to use.
It's one of the fastest opening systems on any folding knife because the draw and the opening happen in a single smooth movement. No separate flip, thumb push, or button required. Many users describe it as "lightning fast" and especially useful in situations where every fraction of a second matters.
Slower / controlled opening (Thumb Disk):
You can also open the knife the traditional way using the knurled thumb disk on the blade spine. Simply push the disk with your thumb to swing the blade open manually.
Tips for best performance:
It works best with sturdy pocket materials like denim jeans.
A little practice (just a few draws) makes the Wave deployment very consistent and reliable.
The knife uses a strong frame lock that engages solidly when the blade opens via the Wave.
This combination gives you the best of both worlds: ultra-fast "grab-and-go" access when speed counts, plus easy manual opening for everyday tasks.
